What is your fat burning zone?

In one of my previous blogs, I did share the absolute #1 fat loss tip but in order for everything to work, you also need to make sure you are in your fat burning zone. Nutrition is the other important thing. In this blog, I am covering the fat burning zone.

Question - What exactly is fat burning zone and how to measure it?

The first thing you would need for this is a heart rate monitor and I recommend the Xiaomi Mi Band (here is my review and amazon link). Now let's get down to our math exercise of the day,

Step 1
Subtract your age with 220. I am 29 so below is what I get,
220 - 29 (your age) = 191

Step 2
Multiply the result of step 1 with 0.6 and 0.8
191 x 0.6 = 114.6
191 x 0.8 = 152.8

This heart rate range of 114.6 to 152.8 is the fat burning zone for all 29 year olds out there. Anything above this is muscle loss (the most dreaded thing for our body builder friends). Below is a handy table I have put together,

If you personally know me, you already know that I am into running. I have been using the Xiaomi Mi Band for quite some time now and although I don't really review products on my blog, I would like to give you a quick overview of this handy fitness band.

The Mi Band is a simple rubber strip with a piece of aluminium hardware that does the entire job. In addition to monitoring your steps, it also monitors your sleep and heart rate (heart rate is what we need to measure the fat burning zone)

The official app that brings this band to life, Mi Fit, keeps your fitness records and streaks handy. The band can also vibrate to give you notifications like incoming calls, alarms etc.

You don't have to keep your phone's bluetooth or location turned on all day for the band to work. The band will automatically sync the entire data with your phone when you open the app and turn on the location and bluetooth. As someone who has run close to 1000 kms and burned more than 65000 kcal in the process (thanks to Endomondo for the stats), I feel worthy enough to share some pointers on running. To be frank, these stats above are nothing compared to some of the marathoners that I know. No side talks. Let's get straight down to it. You know the question - what is the #1 thing that I should do to lose some fat?

The answer is in the math - burn more calories than you consume!

An average man requires 2500 kcal and an average woman requires 2000 kcal everyday. So if you are an average man consuming 2500 kcal everyday, you need to burn more than 2500 kcal everyday to create a fat deficit.

The good part is, we burn calories while doing everything, even while sleeping! But can you sleep your way to fat loss? Not so easy pal!

All thanks to my PMP certification, I have been approached by a lot of people of late on all kinds of platforms for a little bit of guidance on clearing the exam. Why do Muslims sacrifice animals on Eid al-Adha (Bakra Eid)?

Let's get a few things straight,

1. A person with a vegetarian or vegan diet preference can totally be a true and practicing Muslim and fulfill all his or her religious duties. It is not mandatory for a Muslim to consume non-vegetarian food (Since I don't like Mutton, I usually get a "mutton nahi khate? what kind of Muslim are you?" comment every now and then)

2. The very basis of Islam is a doubtless belief in the central religious book - the holy Quran, which includes stories of about 25 prophets including Musa (known as Moses in Judaism), Isa (known as Jesus in Christianity) among others

3. Animal sacrifice does not eliminate your sins. In certain cultures, animal sacrifice is considered as "washing away sins", that is not the case in Islam

Being someone who likes to use facebook only for social networking and staying in touch with friends, I understand if you decide to "unfollow" a few from your list because of their burning politically motivated posts. The central theme of such posts is basically hatred. Be it justifying or inciting hatred towards people that do not support their political ideologies, belong to a different religion or community, speak a different language or simply from a different region. In fact, why just the people that make such posts, you can very well "unfollow" someone specific for no specific reason! I mean, why waste your social media time on something you don't like? Right?

From paranoid to android!

There comes a time in everyone's life when looking at the mobile phone notifications just doesn't suffice. We battle that situation, we change the phone's wallpaper, lock screen, ringtones and even the phone back cover. All of this only to give the phone a fresh breath of life. This avoids the urge of switching to a newer phone. But the situation gets stalemated when the phone gets terribly slow!

And when that happened to my Lumia 820, I happily switched to Lumia 925. But when the time came for the next upgrade... I was out of options. The Lumia 950 and 950 XL have some of the worst reviews out there and there is no point buying any of the two. In the year 2009 came a Salman Khan flick named Wanted which crossed 100 crores in business. Presenting Soya Says for the 50th time!

Yes, the title of the blog does imply that this is my 50th blog post!

If you personally know any blogger, you know that making 50 posts isn't a big deal. Bloggers blog all the time. Bloggers usually blog in a specific domain. Bloggers make a living off their blogs!

For me, the 50th post is a big deal because none of the above applies to me :-)

From being featured on a few websites to being asked to guest blog about certain stuff to winning blogging competitions, I may not consider myself a blogger but I definitely consider blogging as one of my favorite hobbies.

I do get a few questions here and there about blogging. People wanting to start a blog, people wanting to continue their blogs but are out of ideas, people wondering how to find the time and so on. I believe in the saying, "where there's a will, there's a way".

But of course, if you are looking up to me for some tips, considering I am already 50 blogs old, here are 4 of them,

The word ‘commitment’ may mean different things to different people. For a 15-year-old chap, it may just be a word his girlfriend repeatedly uses to bring some legitimacy to their relationship. For a 25-year-old girl, it could be a decision to get married and for a 35-year-old man, it could mean a decision to quit alcohol. You get the idea. Of course, depending on different situations, decisions may come at different ages for different people. For the record, by no means am I suggesting women should get married at 25 :)

Nonetheless, the fact is that commitment is a big deal and nobody just readily gets into one. We all need time to analyze and take our decision and that is how it should be. But along the way, there are a few things that we must avoid. Some are below,

Clearing PMP in 7 weeks - My Experience

Before we begin with this blog, please do not treat this as a guide to what you should be doing to pass the PMP exam. Rather treat this purely as my experience of clearing PMP in the grueling 7 weeks run up to the exam day. I will keep this as crisp as possible and my assumption is that you already have the basic information on PMP (like experience and PDU requirements, different PMP books available out there, contact hours, exam format, PG-KA etc)

So in order to clear the PMP on the 50th day, there are certain pre-prep steps that I took,

1. Selected the dates of the PDU training well in advance

2. Made sure I didn't have any other commitments around 1 month after the PDU training as that was my target PMP exam date

Once done with both the steps above it was time to put my head down and not look up until the exam day. The next 7 weeks were obviously very, very important and exhausting. PMP is not just about clearing the exam. It’s much more about understanding the application of proj…
