Moving On...

Image
You get a strange feeling when you're about to leave a place... like you'll not only miss the moments you cherished but you'll miss the person you are now at this time and place... because you know you'll never be this way ever again...

No, I don't want to get sad about this. I mean come on I am a grown up. Something as simple as this should not even bother me but the fact is that unfortunately, it is. I cannot get over the reality that this is actually my last night at this abode. A place that has seen all versions of me in the last four and a half years. A place that has been my lounge, my discotheque, my style studio and my ultimate destination after all the daily chores, office hours, weekend parties, short trips or home trips. A place that has been my bachelor-pad for all these years.

This was my first address when I came to Bangalore in May 2011 and it hadn't changed since. I recall the day I came here with all of my stuff that was very little for this larg…

Digital India vs Cyber Bullies

Image
As Digital India dawns upon us, we Indians are having a great time tri-coloring our facebook profile pictures. But then there are some of us who do not align with all this pomp and show, those who think changing the profile photo with the colors of our flag means support for facebook's pet devil - internet.org or for Modi. Follow a facebook discussion on this topic and you will notice how the discussion takes a bizarre turn. Those who haven't updated their profile photos are termed anti-Modi, Pro-AAP, Congress supporters, anti-National and in some cases asked to go to Pakistan!

Why all this hatred? India stands today as one of the most politically polarized nations and we see people debating, defending and abusing on social media all the time. While some may term debating on social media as healthy (except for being a colossal waste of time), it gets hateful way too fast. The root of the problem itself lies in hateful posts and while I have already blogged about how to get rid …

Incomplet

This is not one of my usual blogs. This will be meaningless and you are not going to see any point. Neither would I. This won't be funny. This is a tale which isn't complete. The intention of this post is yet to be established. Or there is no intention behind it really. Nothing to prove. Nothing to teach. And nothing to rant. This is just a write-up without the boundary of proving a point, without the shackles of making sense and without the limits of telling a story.

Although this is just a piece of writing it does have a character. The character is a legendary warrior. He was the warrior in an endless desert. Was he in exile or was he leading his army was unknown. None of his men were in sight. Did he have a name? Yes. His name had to be Sultan.

Dressed in all white with a white keffiyeh covering the head, he was looking at the sunset. Desert sunsets are beautiful. He would often look at sunsets as if he was searching for something. His search would probably never end. For he …

Flipkart image search: ecommerce takes its next step

Image
I was recently invited to attend a blogger meet organized by Flipkart. Headed by Flipkart's Chief Product Officer Punit Soni, I was one of the 120 odd bloggers who were given a demo of what Flipkart seems to be riding high on these days - Image Search.
Image search is a pretty simple concept, think of it like the Shazam for shopping. I don't really want to share a demo or bore you with a summary of what happened at the event. However, do note that image search works only for fashion products and its as simple as - You go to a party and you see this guy wearing red shoes (it's likely that this guy is me!). So you want a pair of those red colored shoes but what are they called? Loafers? Moccasins? Boat Shoes? Slip Ons? Chukkas? I am trying to stick to Flipkart so don't want to get into the difference (a good topic for a future blog though!) but they are definitely not chukkas. So when you come back you either search for "Red Loafers" or "Red Slip Ons".…

Top 5 things nobody knows about flights

Image
"If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life."
- Casablanca (1942)

There are innumerable emotions attached with travelling, be it the happiness of meeting your loved ones after a long time, the gloominess of leaving a place you may never return to, the excitement of a vacation, the lump in the throat when you wave goodbye and the list goes on. But no matter how you feel, there are some questions about flights nobody has answers to!
So while you may find flights tiring, scary or monotonous, below are the 5 things you may have no idea about,

(Prologue - I am an intelligent person, this is not an intelligent blog. See what I did there?)
1. Switch off your mobile phones! This is the most annoying thing about flights. There isn't any network signal up there then how does a small mobile phone affect the functioning of such a large airplane carrying at least 200 people!…

To BE (and MBA) or not to BE (and MBA)

Image
It's June. The month when roughly 15 lac engineers graduate in India every year! So let's understand what are their plans ahead.

But before that, there's one thing that I have noticed about working away from home. The people back in the hometown consider you an achiever. By working in an alien city whether you have achieved anything is a separate discussion altogether. Not that I am complaining but this giant-societal-expectations-cloud hovers above your head all the time and occasionally results in the rain of unnecessary stress and fear of failure. But not everything is that bad. Since you are considered as someone who is doing good for himself, there are times when an acquaintance may reach out for some career advice and hence pop my favorite question - Should I do an MBA after BE?

Giving it a second thought, why MBA af…

Hungry & Alone? Help is here!

Image
If you are someone who lives alone far away from home there is one question you have definitely been asked by every new person you meet - "So do you cook yourself or how do you manage?"

Legit question! And if you are someone like me who can only cook instant noodles, it becomes an even more difficult question to answer because you are definitely not cooking at home. After the initial hustle of trying eating joints, Cooks and tiffin services, I am sure you will land in a manageable position to be able to answer this question. But breakfast, brunch and late night eats could still be a concern. What do you do when you want to eat something late night while watching a movie on your laptop or when you want a quick breakfast fix? I am sure this isn't a question someone would ask but I have answers for you nonetheless 😉

Below are 3 ideas for super-quick-short-eats that will make your life much easier and none of them involve any kind of cooking,

1. Banana + Vanilla Yogurt - I lov…

Shoes. Why do they matter?

Shoes. Why do they matter? Isn't the main function of shoes just to cover your feet and protect you from the seasons, the roads and everything else? Some 5000 years ago this was probably true!

Gentlemen, in this age, shoes are considered as one of the first few things women notice about men. You don't want to be wearing all scuffed unpolished shoes when she looks at them for the first time because that leads to a bad first impression. In fact, if you follow men's style magazines, websites and videos you would have probably heard the saying, "If eyes are the window to the soul, then shoes are the window to your style."

Below are the three reasons why you should pay attention to your shoes starting today.

1. Women notice shoes
Let's face it, we men are basically slobs! The only time we take care of ourselves is when we think someone is going to take notice. Otherwise a pair of boxers, a tee and pizza are good enough to s…

Accessories maketh the man

Gentlemen, accessories are extremely important and one should think of them as the accessories on a car. A brand new car looks incomplete without some accessories and wrong accessories are going to worsen the case. So keep in mind that accessories are completing your look and the wrong ones are going to spoil the entire ensemble.

This blog suggests 3 accessories that can find their way in your wardrobe but before delving into that let's quickly understand the pre-requisites that must already be present there. These are my personal choices and may differ based on your age, lifestyle and personal preferences.

The Pre-requisites,

a) Watch - Every man should have at least one wrist watch even if he is not into them. If it's your first wrist watch, go with a silver tone metal or black leather strap as these are most versatile. Avoid the golden color if it's your first watch

b) Belt - Two belts at the least. A black formal leather belt an…

How to sport the sockless look

Image

Wearing shoes without socks is in. You see them everywhere. Movies, celebs, models and on the streets of some of the fashion forward cities. Men today are rocking the sockless look more than ever and this blog tells you how to do it the right way.

Gentlemen, as much as you might love the look, please understand sockless shoes doesn't necessarily have to be "sockless". The loafers, moccasins and sneakers usually have an extra layering or softer material from the inside that saves your feet from getting hurt but you, Sir, want to take a step ahead and go sockless on your formal shoes - the oxfords, the brogues, the chukkas and the bluchers or in Ryan Gosling's case the tassel loafers.

As good as it looks in the pic, my suggestion would be to do it the right way. Please consider the following,

1. Formal shoes are not made to be worn without socks. A company manufacturing formal shoes is probably visioning them to be worn in o…

Rise! Dress like a man

What comes to your mind when you read the sentence, "Dress like a man"? Probably suit up or make an effort to look good? Whatever that comes to your mind, if it's anything less dressy than what a woman would think on reading "Dress like a lady" then you've got work to do. And the work is to start dressing up. This blog argues on why it is equally important for men to take care of their appearance as it is for women. After all, gender equality works both ways!

There are loads of research and quotes and social experiments and other inspirational stuff available out there that talks about dressing sharp but we are not going into it, we are only paying attention to the top 3 reasons on why you, Sir, need to dress up!

1.  Confidence - You are most confident every single time you wear the best clothes in your wardrobe. Its simple, when you are super dressed you are super confident and it comes out in the way you work and…

Travelogue - Gong Xi Fa Cai Kuala Lumpur

Image
...a foreigner can photograph the exteriors of a nation, but I think that this is as far as he can get. I think that no foreigner can report the nation's interior - its soul, its life, its speech, its thoughts... says one of the English literature's greatest, Mark Twain, in his book - How to tell a story; and other essays

Now I'll be honest, I wanted to stay true to Mr Twain and only photograph the exteriors of Kuala Lumpur. I had no plans to write a blog but when you are 2 hours early at the airport there aren't many things you can do. To make sure that this doesn't look like an endless rant I will not go beyond 9 points. Please note that since I was on an official trip, I didn't have the time to visit places a usual traveler would.

1. To start with, I must say the movies have painted a totally wrong picture of flying international. It is not as easy as realization of your true love in one scene and taking the next flight in the second scene! Visa approval takes…

Top 5 things not to do in the elevator

Image
Two of my most favorite ads involve an elevator, here's the first one,

Corollary,
1. Having a cute pup doesn't make you a stud
2. Being scared of pets isn't always a bad thing

Personally, I am not into pets at all but those who are would agree that taking them along in the elevator isn't a big deal. Well, yeah it isn't a big deal, in fact, its good as long as it leads to situations like the one in the ad but this blog isn't about pets, it's about elevators! Now, if you work in an office where you need to use an elevator to reach your desk or stay in an apartment with one, you are going to like this blog for sure :)

Let's be honest, an elevator (or lift) is a silly little thing. You are in it every day for a few seconds with random strangers standing so close that you can feel their breath. This is a weird experience but there's no escaping it and the only thing we can do is to try to make it better. Below are the 5 things, you should absolutely not be do…
